POLICE SERVICE: A DUTY FOR GOD AND TO MANKIND
Effective policing is not consist only in the apprehension and jailing of criminals, but it is more of the prevention of crimes. By this the society is helped to save hard earned revenues that would have been spent on keeping and feeding some people who are kept in government custody as a result of their wrongdoings. More so, more people will be available to engage in productive activities that can generate more employment opportunities and increase our country’s Gross Domestic Product.
Nigeria and Nigerians need peace to make progress.
An Inspector General of Police that is refined, intelligent, cool headed and proactive in the discharge of his responsibilities is the person that can give Nigeria the needed security.
IGP Adamu Mohammed have proved himself to be a dedicated officer and have done much well in managing the crisis situations that he met as IGP. More importantly his ability to manage crisis proficiently and maturely is quite obvious and credible.
The way he handled the ENDSARS protest is a testimony to this and even some other ones before that. He managed that protest so well that casualties that could have arisen from policing actions and from the protesters were minimized, except for the Army that came to do some shootings at the Lekki Toll Plaza in Lagos.
Whether the shooting was, into the air or at humans is now a subject of controversies, accusations and counter accusations and also a matter of litigation. The judicial panels of enquiry on the matter are currently sitting across the country.
If the IGP is interested in serving beyond his retirement date, an extension of his service period will not be a misguided idea.
A country that is troubled by crisis here and there needs refined, proactive and Godfearing leaders for her institutions.
–A refined officer can help refine the society.
But a “kill and go” ( as children used to call the Anti-riot Police when I was in primary school), a sadomasochist and an insensitively inhuman persons cannot help in a crisis situation.
